Language Swap to Success

Learning a language is hard. It takes time and dedication. It can be boring! No matter how many online or offline shortcuts you take, you will always find that the hard yards have to be mercilessly worked through. There are no shortcuts.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that there is some fun to be had along the way and you don’t have to have been learning your language of choice for years and years. Enter the language swap. Also called language exchange or intercambio en Espanol.

The fact is, to be a successful swapper, the only skill you need is to be able to talk, and by talk I mean – in your own language. That can’t be hard right. Right.

The idea behind a language swap is that you find a language learner who is learner your native language and you theirs. You converse in one language then switch and converse in the other giving you both a chance. You each get a go as teacher and then as student.

Suppose you are very new to the language or you are simply really bad at it. The best part is that you aren’t really even inconveniencing your language swap partner because he is really there to speak with you in your language.  For this reason you should be piling into language swaps as early as possible because you have nothing to lose and everything to give.

With language swapping, what you want is quantity over quality. The more time you spend in front of a native speaker the better. Get lots of swaps! Try new partners all the time. Some people, like in your normal life, you’ll just get on with and some not. The best part is that you get to make new friends without having to do weird things like use dating sites for finding a “man friend”.

Lastly, it’s really important to have fun and not take it all too seriously. If you are having fun with your language, you will succeed. No one succeeds at things they don’t like. So get out there and start swapping.
